<h1 id="liym223d1bi" data-toc-id="liym223d1bi">What is a custom instruction?</h1><p>Custom instructions are instructions that you provide to direct the GM to behave differently than the defaults. They are generally used for controlling the way the GM narrates or talks to the party.</p><blockquote><p>For those more technical, custom instructions are a way to provide your own prompt to the messages in the <strong>narration</strong> module.</p></blockquote><callout-component color="Accent"><p>Custom instructions should be used mostly to influence the style of narration. They are not designed to be used to interact with game state or to input lore/knowledge of the world.</p></callout-component><h2 id="ct2etoqcxqt" data-toc-id="ct2etoqcxqt">Custom Instruction GM Modes</h2><p>When creating a custom instruction, you can set which GM mode it’s used in. This allows you to ‘hook’ into a certain GM mode and ensure that the custom instruction will be used when the GM is in that mode. Read our article on ACE-1 to learn more about GM modes.</p><p>For example, if you made a custom instruction with the GM Mode “NPC Dialog”, that custom instruction will be visible to the GM when they’re in a mode focused for NPC dialog.</p><p>If the custom instruction is set to ‘Always’, then the instruction will always be provided to the GM no matter which mode they’re in.</p><h2 id="73eck7alayt" data-toc-id="73eck7alayt">Examples</h2><h3 id="fcmta1z5fmf" data-toc-id="fcmta1z5fmf">Good Examples</h3><p>Good examples are generally focused on one topic and tend to focus on how the GM should respond, narrate, act, or describe things.</p><p>The examples below are exaggerated to show the range of different outputs you can get with differently focused instructions and how you may use them.</p><ol><li><p><strong>[Always]</strong>: This is a pirate themed world, always talk like you’re a pirate in your responses and make liberal use of the phrases “Arrrggghhhh” and “Matey”.</p><p></p><p>Effect:</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193bd9f-5a71-72a8-ad7d-1bdb00874bfc.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"></li><li><p><strong>[Always]</strong>: This is a gritty world, you should swear a lot and so should all the NPCs when players talk with them.</p><p></p><p>Effect:</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193bda5-e542-7085-b02d-dc9991a1e4f6.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"></li><li><p><strong>[Always]</strong>: Begin each message with [location, fantasy date and time] followed by a new line.</p><p></p><p>Effect:</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193bdc7-f2b4-7a1c-966e-bd3562df0cef.png" data-width="100%" data-align="center"></li></ol><blockquote><p>Note: This instruction will not actually keep accurate track of the date or time. State like this may be tracked through the <em>chat history</em>, but will not be persisted and has no accuracy guarantees with other mechanics. These types of instructions are more of thematic purposes and an example of how you can modify the <em>aesthetics</em> or <em>syntax</em> of each response from the GM.</p></blockquote><ol start="4"><li><p><strong>[NPC Dialog]</strong>: Dialog should be very conversational and NPCs should be very humorous and tell jokes often. </p><p></p><p>Effect:</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193be08-22be-7fb4-ad72-e73df3a33c7e.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"></li></ol><h3 id="6or30lda642" data-toc-id="6or30lda642">Bad Examples</h3><p>In general, bad examples are ones that try to impose <strong>game mechanics</strong> or instructions to interact with <strong>game state</strong>. Custom instructions are just text that can impact the output or flavour of the <em>narration.</em> They do not have any impact on what the system can look up or interact with.</p><ol><li><p>Look up existing NPCs in the database before creating new ones. If an existing one is found then do not generate it.</p><blockquote><p>Why is it bad?: Telling the model to look something up will not give it the ability to do so. This will have no effect and ACE-1 automatically does this for you.</p></blockquote></li><li><p>Do not include ANY tropes, if you detect tropes such as “hooden figures”, “wooden boxes”, stop generating and replace the tropes with an equivalent.</p><blockquote><p>Why is it bad? The model can not rewrite or replace its response in the middle of generation. Telling the AI to <strong>not</strong> do something is generally ineffective; positive instructions</p><p>describing what you <strong>want</strong> to happen are generally better.</p></blockquote><p></p></li></ol><p>These examples do not cover <em>every</em> possible use case for custom instructions, and are guidelines so you can understand what affects they will actually have in your campaigns. We encourage you to experiment and share in the Discord custom instructions you find useful!</p><h1 id="6k2so4ecy6f" data-toc-id="6k2so4ecy6f">Custom Instructions for Generations</h1><p>Additionally, you can provide one custom instruction for the generators of new entities. These custom instructions will <strong>ONLY</strong> be used when <strong>creating</strong> a <strong>new entity</strong> such as a Character, Area, POI, Item, etc.</p><p>It’s best to place custom instructions in here that will affect the details on the generated entity. For example, you can add a custom instruction that all new characters should have a certain trait in their personality or backstory. Or that all new items should have a minimum cost or be of a certain shape.</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193bd84-ddf3-71c6-9106-7d817ace42ef.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><h1 id="7pdk14mzyst" data-toc-id="7pdk14mzyst">What are custom instructions NOT used for?</h1><p>Custom instructions are only able to affect the behaviour of the <strong>output</strong> of <strong>narration</strong> responses. They can <strong>NOT</strong> be used for controlling <strong>game mechanics</strong> such as dice rolls, XP, item bonuses, etc. Nor will they have an affect of how ACE-1 can look up or update game state variables.</p><blockquote><p>In the future this <em>may</em> change as we give you more ability to hook into and affect different parts of ACE-1.</p></blockquote><p></p><p></p>

<h1 id="6b1zaztdcos" data-toc-id="6b1zaztdcos">What is Pick Your Path (PYP) Mode?</h1><p>In Pick Your Path mode, Franz will occasionally present you 3 paths with how he’ll respond to your latest action. This gives you as the player much more control over where the story goes, as you can control not only your own actions but also how the GM responds to those actions.</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b7aa-0be0-7ab0-bac5-1b38e03cacdb.png" data-width="100%" data-align="right"><p>For the most control, you can select “I have a better idea” to make your own suggested path for how the GM should respond. Pick Your Path Mode

<p>From the settings you can adjust the pacing of your campaign and the GM responses. By default you’ll be in Adventure mode where the GM will actively encourage questing and exploration. You can switch to Downtime mode to have the GM be less focused on questing and have a more relaxed slice-of-life experience.</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b832-4242-77fe-96da-72a7dbd4d1a4.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p>You can also quickly see and adjust the pacing mode by clicking on the mode in the most recent GM response in your campaign play screen.</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b833-b17c-76c4-b970-3c8fabb07e53.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p></p>

Pacing Mode

<p>By default, entities that you haven’t seen or met will be unknown. In the world tab, they will be displayed as Unknown and their images will not be visible. </p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b84c-bf98-7d48-a6e3-5a3953acc7cd.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p>When you visit a Point of Interest (POI) or an Area, you will learn that location and it will become known to you. When visiting a POI, any characters at that POI will become visible and you’ll be able to see their avatar. When you learn their name, they’ll become known. </p><p>You can turn this mechanic off in the campaign settings, at which point every entity will become visible with their image and name. </p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b84d-5cc3-78c7-9f91-e17b41ee4066.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p></p>

Hide Unknown Entities

<p>In Campaign settings, you can find Gamemaster Settings to tune how the GM behaves to your liking. Additionally, World builders can set certain GM settings and custom instructions in the Gamemaster tab of the world which will apply to all campaigns started from that world.</p><h2 id="8bryqy57sy7" data-toc-id="8bryqy57sy7">Include 5e Defaults</h2><p>By default, campaigns will include the races, classes, spells, and items from D&amp;D 5e as available options for you and the GM to use. Toggle this setting off if you don’t want D&amp;D 5e material to be available, which is useful for homebrew campaigns in non-fantasy worlds. </p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b8a7-b60a-7a4d-8d4f-018d90ca2ac6.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><h2 id="546xylklzke" data-toc-id="546xylklzke">Include Combat Encounters</h2><p>By default, combat encounters are off while we work on revamping and fixing the issues in the current combat system. You can enable combat encounters if you wish to play with the current combat system. When enabled, Franz will prompt you to roll for initiative which starts the combat encounter flow. </p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193b8a7-a8c3-71fd-ade7-9ec0c8db8ba6.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><h2 id="mokwb4r3ys3" data-toc-id="mokwb4r3ys3">Generation Settings</h2><blockquote><p>Note: If you haven’t yet tried ACE-1, we recommend that you keep these settings on as the timing of generations has improved significantly.</p></blockquote><p>You can control whether or not the GM will generate new characters, Areas, POIs, classes, races, items, and spells in your campaigns. If you toggle off a generation, then the GM will no longer generate that entity.</p><p>Each generation can also have one optional custom instruction which will be included when generating that entity. Gamemaster Settings

<p>AI has come a long way, but it still isn't perfect. For our use case, it may never be. Our game works by converting your natural text into game state. Natural text is not exact, and the outputs from AI are not either. On top of that, your expectations of what Franz should do might be different from someone else. We will continue to work hard towards making the experience as immersive and magical as we can, but you may still run into situations where Franz does not do what you expect. This guide will take you through some tips and tricks to make Franz work for you.</p><h2 style="text-align: start" id="l36e6z50a4t" data-toc-id="l36e6z50a4t"><strong>1. Be Specific</strong></h2><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">When talking about NPCs, POIs, and other things, be specific! If you're meaning to go to Grimelda's Potion Shop, Franz will have a much easier time retrieving information about Grimelda's Potion Shop if you say "Grimelda's Potion Shop" instead of "the shop". The latter may work if there is enough context in the recent chat history, but you'll have better results if you are specific.</p><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">Things you should always try to be specific about:</p><ul><li><p>The names of locations, NPCs, and items</p></li><li><p>The quantity of items you are purchasing or consuming</p></li><li><p>The name of a location you are traveling to, or amount of time + direction you are traveling in</p></li></ul><h2 style="text-align: start" id="0s7tpbeqolr" data-toc-id="0s7tpbeqolr"><strong>2. Custom Instructions</strong></h2><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">If you want Franz to act in a particular way, you can use custom instructions. For example, if you want Franz to talk like a pirate, you can add an instruction "Always talk like a pirate". Custom instructions are set within your <strong>campaign</strong> settings.</p><h2 style="text-align: start" id="w63xii4pycw" data-toc-id="w63xii4pycw"><strong>3. Making sure Game State is accurate</strong></h2><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">Franz does his best to get game state updated correctly, but he might get confused occasionally and get something wrong. In situations like that, you should try to correct the game state, because it affects the context we give to Franz. For example, if he puts you at the wrong location, he may see a different set of NPCs than the ones that are at the location you should actually be at.</p><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">You can update game state</p><ul><li><p>When an update happens and we surface it in chat, there is an update button</p></li><li><p>The info panel will allow you to update things on the fly, such as your location or stats</p></li><li><p>There are specific pages for game state that you can use to modify your campaign in the lefthand sidebar</p></li></ul><p></p>

How to get the most out of Franz

Memory

<p>Whenever your GM sends a message, we run a process to extract memories from the most recent messages. Those memories might be important plot developments, world lore that you learned, or objectives that were given to your party. These memories will be automatically added to the Memories page as you play.</p><h2 id="eyy4ztyx2w7" data-toc-id="eyy4ztyx2w7">Limits</h2><p>You can store an unlimited amount of memories as you play, but each plan is limited to a certain number of memories that are included in context. For example, you might accumulate 1000+ memories in your campaign, but when you send your next message, ACE will only use the 100 highest priority memories.</p><p>Each subscription tier has the following amount of memories:</p><ul><li><p>Free - 30</p></li><li><p>Starter - 50</p></li><li><p>Pro - 70</p></li><li><p>Legend - 100</p></li></ul><h2 id="5pyrqw27ocz" data-toc-id="5pyrqw27ocz">How does ACE choose which memories to use?</h2><p>ACE dynamically chooses memories by using recency, memory type, and whether or not a memory is locked to create an overall priority score.</p><h3 id="s847wma2xs0" data-toc-id="s847wma2xs0">Recency</h3><p>More recent memories have higher priority than older ones.</p><h3 id="pc7cse8s5yx" data-toc-id="pc7cse8s5yx">Priority Score</h3><p>When your GM creates a memory, it will also assign a priority score. You can change this in the memories tab.</p><h3 id="deyq8rmbt6f" data-toc-id="deyq8rmbt6f">Memory Type</h3><p>Some types of memories are more important than others. For campaign cohesion, plot developments are generally more important than world lore. We rank memory types in this order (highest priority to lowest priority)</p><ul><li><p>Quest Given / Accepted (This should stay in context until a quest has been completed)</p></li><li><p>Plot Developments</p></li><li><p>NPC Lore</p></li><li><p>World Lore</p></li><li><p>Story Beats</p></li></ul><p>You can change the memory type by clicking the type on the memory card.</p><h3 id="l8bdb80mlmk" data-toc-id="l8bdb80mlmk">Locked Messages</h3><p>You can lock messages by clicking the lock icon. When you lock a memory, that means it will always stay in context. If your campaign or ongoing quest would not make sense without a key detail, it is a good candidate to lock. For example, if you learned that the tomb is booby trapped, you may want to keep that one locked so when you get to the tomb, your GM will remember that it is booby trapped.</p><p>Locked messages still count towards your in-context memory limit. Don’t lock too many memories, otherwise you won’t leave enough room for new memories to form.</p><p></p>

<h1 id="ki4wtkbzili" data-toc-id="ki4wtkbzili">Short Rests</h1><p>To take a short rest, simply tell Franz, “I take a short rest”, or something to that effect. He will ask you to roll hit dice. </p><p>After rolling, you should automatically have some health restored. </p><p>You must have hit dice remaining in order to successfully perform a short rest.</p><p>To regain hit dice, you will need to take a long rest.</p><h1 id="f00485ys44m" data-toc-id="f00485ys44m">Long Rests</h1><p>To take a long rest, tell Franz that you wish to take a long rest. You usually need to be in a situation where a long rest makes sense, such as staying the night at an inn.</p><p></p><callout-component color="Accent"><p>It definitely helps to include the keywords “long rest” or “short rest” in your message.</p></callout-component><p></p><p></p>

These are some of the best worlds that we, or our players have created.</p></li><li><p>You can pick one of our existing characters, or create your own!</p></li><li><p>Choose your inventory</p></li><li><p>Invite your friends! If you want to invite a friend to join you in your adventures, you can do so on this campaign lobby page.</p></li><li><p>Once you've started the campaign, you just talk to Franz to begin the game! You can update your world, character sheet, and everything from the sidebar. Franz can tell when you're talking "in game" first "out of game".</p></li><li><p>Franz may get things wrong, or sometimes get caught up in loops! This is just a problem with the current state of AI, and we're working on addressing it. <h2 id="4qe8olom5o5" data-toc-id="4qe8olom5o5">Add Classes to your Workshop</h2><p>Visit the classes tab in the workshop to create a class. As you create worlds, you’ll be able to add this class to them. Adding Homebrew Classes

<p>Worlds are the backbone of Friends &amp; Fables. When you RP with AI, you'll often find it going in very similar circles. Worlds change the experience by pre-populating enough information for an AI game master to expand upon. The result is a much more immersive experience.</p>

<p>F&amp;F worlds are a grid where each unit represents 100 meters or approximately 1 minute of travel. If two POIs are 10 units apart, they are 1 KM or about a 10 minute walk apart.</p>

Coordinate System

<p>To go somewhere in F&amp;F, you just describe to Franz something along the lines of:</p><ul><li><p>"I walk 15 minutes North" (Mentioning a specific amount of time and direction)</p></li><li><p>"I walk all the way to Ezra's Tavern" (Mentioning a specific POI)</p></li></ul><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">Franz will automatically update your coordinates based on what you wrote. Since he is processing only your text, the more specific you are, the more accurate he will be at updating your coordinates. If you mention a specific POI, he will update your coordinates to the coordinates of that POI. If you use time + direction, he will use that.</p><p class="nx-mt-6 nx-leading-7 first:nx-mt-0" style="text-align: start">Converting natural language into coordinate updates may not always be 100% accurate. There might be conflicting information or Franz might interpret something slightly differently than you. This is why we provide an easy way to correct any automatic updates.</p>

<p>As a world builder, can differentiate to your players which characters are meant to be player characters. <p>To start an encounter, you’ll first want to get to a point in the story where an encounter makes sense narratively. <h1 id="21kez81eyya" data-toc-id="21kez81eyya">Player Turns</h1><h2 id="868xiww8a6m" data-toc-id="868xiww8a6m">Making an Attack</h2><p>On player turns, you can make an attack one of two ways.</p><ol><li><p>You can talk to Franz and dictate your attack “I attack [target(s)] with [weapon or spell]”. Franz will detect your weapon / spell, as well as the targets, and ask you to confirm your attack. Franz may not be completely accurate if the text does not contain enough information. You can edit the attack before confirming.</p></li></ol><callout-component color="Accent"><p>If you are attacking with a specific spell or weapon, make sure you have it equipped or prepared. On your turn, Franz reads your equipped items and learned/prepared spells. <strong>Franz does NOT have access to your entire inventory / spell book</strong>.</p></callout-component><ol start="2"><li><p>Click the Crossing Sword Icon to open up the Attack Panel. <callout-component color="Accent"><p>Both forms of combat are experimental and have a variety of known issues. We have upgrades coming, which should hopefully be finished sometime in January 2025.</p></callout-component><p>You can run combat in Friends &amp; Fables in one of two ways, narrative combat and turn based combat.</p><p>Narrative combat goes through the same systems that normal messages do. The downside to this is that enemies and their stats may not be tracked accurately.</p><p>Turn based combat is an experimental option that can be turned on in your campaign settings. </p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193bdba-991d-712e-a6c0-fa65801368e7.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p>The downside to turn based combat is that the GM will lose a lot of narrative abilities / memory. While we try to allow for mature topics to be part of the game, we have automated systems to detect misuse. <h2 id="0o58xpke1b6" data-toc-id="0o58xpke1b6">LLM Context &amp; Memory 101</h2><p>In order to understand why we manage game state and context the way we do, we should have a general sense of how language models work.</p><p>This is massively oversimplifying it, but you can think of an LLM as autocomplete on steroids. The way it works is it takes a big block of text (in the form of prompts / context) and then spits out some more text.</p><p>One misconception is that language models have memory. This is not true! Language models are stateless and forget everything as soon as they are done with their response. It’s the apps around the language models that handle the memory. So GPT-4 (LLM) does not have memory, but ChatGPT (the app) does have memory. ChatGPT gives GPT-4 the memories anytime you interact with it.</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/01935062-6b80-7b94-947f-1356dc899814.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p>The diagram above is a simplified explanation of what it looks like when you talk to an AI game master in Friends &amp; Fables. Meanwhile, the diagram below zooms in on the F&amp;F Builds Context step.</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/0193506e-7734-7943-942b-0a9eca62a9a2.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><p>A lot of our players are building MASSIVE worlds, with hundreds of locations, NPCs, and items. In addition to things from the SRD, sometimes we’re looking at over a thousand entities, each of which have paragraphs of descriptions, appearances, and other data. If we sent all of that data to a language model every time you sent a message, it would be massively expensive, and we’d be bankrupt! </p><p>Not only is it expensive, but it’s also confusing to both humans and to LLMs if there’s a lot of unrelated information to parse through for your task! It’s much easier and faster for the LLM to complete the task when it only has the relevant information it needs and doesn’t need to parse through and throw out irrelevant information.</p><p>This is why we do our best to pick the most relevant context whenever you send a message. We do this by creating relationships between entities, using character locations, `@mentions` and more.</p><h1 id="taxyx0xr1a3" data-toc-id="taxyx0xr1a3">So, what game state can ACE (Agentic Campaign Engine) actually see?</h1><p>Depending on the situation, ACE will get a different set of context. For example, ACE gets different information in a narration context “I do the thing… what happens next?” vs state update context “Can you update my HP to 20?”. In the former, we’ll want to include more world information, memories, etc. In the latter, we’d want to include your character’s stats.</p><p>For most of your interactions, ACE will see:</p><ul><li><p>Basic world/theme information</p></li><li><p>The last 5-8 messages in the chat history</p></li><li><p>The campaign summary (memories)</p></li><li><p>Basic character information of in-party characters, nearby NPCs, and any mentioned NPCs.</p></li><li><p>Basic information about the current location and area</p></li></ul><h1 id="kq5w301bmkq" data-toc-id="kq5w301bmkq">Can I see what ACE sees?</h1><p>Yes! If you click on a message from the GM, click the 3 dots and then click “View Context”.</p><p>We built this feature so you can examine the memory being used for each message. If you think something should be in there that we’re not currently using, please let us know!</p><img src="https://fb-usercontent.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/01935077-4a5a-70f7-8768-d6bcc2e6eb19.png" data-width="100%" data-align="left"><h1 id="kkcclrew37r" data-toc-id="kkcclrew37r">Why can’t you just add more context?</h1><p>There are two main reasons we don’t throw your entire chat history into context:</p><h3 id="4li8o001a6f" data-toc-id="4li8o001a6f">1) More context is not always better! It can confuse the LLM</h3><p>Your intuition might be that shoving more context into each request will make the LLM smarter, but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes having too much information can actually be a bad thing. Imagine you have a description on one thing that has conflicting information with another. By pulling them both into context, we’d actually be making the lore of the world <em>more</em> confusing to the LLM.</p><p>Our goal is to give the LLM everything that it needs to create an immersive and cohesive experience. While we’re not going to throw the kitchen sink at it, we will be adding in more context as we find reasons to give it more information. By keeping the context limited only to what is necessary, we’re creating a more immersive and intelligent experience.</p><h3 id="droeoqb6p5b" data-toc-id="droeoqb6p5b">2) Cost</h3><p>Across all of our users, we’re handling A LOT of messages. Every word that we send to an LLM costs money. The more we send, the more it costs us. To keep Friends &amp; Fables online, we need it to be a sustainable business. In the future, we’ll open up more subscription options for users who do want to inject more context into each message.</p><p></p>

What game state can ACE see / update?

<p>The AI engine that powers Franz is a mixture of many models depending on the task. These models are primarily composed of <a target="" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://llama.meta.com/llama3/">Llama3 </a>models, as well as our own custom fine tuned models and other provider models depending on the task.</p>

What models do you use?

<p>Unfortunately, no. Friends &amp; Fables has a cloud architecture that is not compatible to be run locally. </p><p>Additionally, we have a lot of interdependent functions which use various LLMs, service providers, and our own custom models. This makes bringing your own API key impossible and difficult to manage. </p>

Can I bring my own API key or run Friends & Fables locally?

<p class="whitespace-pre-wrap break-words">We use <a target="" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://stripe.com/">Stripe</a>, a trusted third-party payment processor, to handle all transactions in Friends &amp; Fables. This means that the actual processing of your payment is not directly managed by us.</p><p class="whitespace-pre-wrap break-words">If your payment card was declined, the most effective steps you can take are:</p><ol><li><p class="whitespace-pre-wrap break-words">Verify your payment information details. The most common reasons for a payment being declined is an incorrect card number, CVV, postal code, billing address, or insufficient funds.</p></li><li><p class="whitespace-pre-wrap break-words">Contact your bank: Your card issuer can provide specific details about why the transaction was declined. Common reasons include insufficient funds, expired cards, or suspicious activity flags.</p></li></ol><p class="whitespace-pre-wrap break-words">If you continue to experience issues after contacting your bank, please email us at support@fables.gg, and we'll do our best to assist you further.</p>

Why was my payment method declined?

<p>We use <a target="" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://stripe.com/">Stripe</a>, a trusted third-party payment processor, to handle all transactions in Friends &amp; Fables. This means our available payment methods are limited to what they offer, which includes:</p><ul><li><p>All major credit cards</p></li><li><p>Link</p></li><li><p>Apple Pay for Apple devices.</p></li><li><p>Cash App for US based customers.</p></li><li><p>Amazon Pay for US based customers.</p></li></ul><p>If paying internationally, the most reliable form of payment is through a credit card. </p><h2 id="e0yfdcdq5wo" data-toc-id="e0yfdcdq5wo">Will you add PayPal?</h2><p>Stripe does not currently offer PayPal as a payment method for non-EU businesses. If they allow PayPal as a payment method for businesses outside the EU then we will consider it then, but there are no plans for a separate PayPal integration. </p><p></p>

What payment methods do you support?

<p>The AI system behind Franz costs a lot of money to run, and unlike traditional games the cost increases the more users play. To grow Friends &amp; Fables sustainably without compromising on service quality, we need to cover our costs. Without subscriptions, the service would not be possible and be shut down for everyone.</p><p>That being said, we want to make TTRPGs more accessible to everyone. A refreshable free tier is planned for the end of 2024 / start of 2025. </p>

Why isn't Friends & Fables completely free?

<p>We are always evaluating new language models as they come out so that we can deliver the best experience to you.</p><p>Here’s how we think about adding new models: </p><ul><li><p>Is the model fast enough?</p></li><li><p>Is the model cheap enough?</p></li><li><p>Does the model pass our tests?</p></li></ul><p>We run a TON of tokens through each message in Friends &amp; Fables. When you send a message, the tokens are not just the length of the message you send, but a ton of context that we send with it (game state, world context, character sheets, etc). For this reason, we have to choose models that work in both speed and cost. </p><p>Many of the latest and greatest frontier models are expensive and slow. While they are smarter, they won’t always be the best choice because they are too slow and will be too expensive. These models are generally more suited for low volume + high value tasks, such as business reporting or document generation, but are not as suited for our use case which is high volume.</p>
